Deep refurbishment, internal alterations and roof extension of a 1950s semi-detached house in Joppa, Edinburgh.

The house, built by a local contractor in 1957, occupies an elevated plot and offers generous street and south facing front garden with unexpected sea views to the North. The existing elements of the house are of modest mid century traditional construction with a traditional harled weather resistant but breathable skin.
A range of alterations to the existing internal layout were made to adapt it to suit the requirements of modern family living, the most visible of which being the creation of two new bathrooms within a large new dormer at the front of the house.
The additional floorspace afforded by the considerable dormer provided the necessary additional bathroom accommodation, thus freeing up the first floor bedroom space and circulation crucially preserving uninhibited sea views to the North.
The dormer dominates the front façade of the building so required some considered detailing. We designed a Douglas Fir frame influenced by the original porch structure. As the dormer houses an en-suite and a family bathroom, we wanted to make the most of the solar gain and light into the centre of the plan however with a street frontage of course required privacy.
Within the modular composition of the dormer we used a mix of solid panels (where the partition meets the facade), solid timber shutter for ventilation and some simple semi-opaque and transparent fixed glazed panels.
