Alterations and extension to a converted farm steading block in East Lothian.

This modest project, an early one for the practice, involved the reorganisation of the existing ground floor to rationalise living spaces, alongside a new extension to create a garden-facing dining space.

Our clients, a young family, wanted to replace the low grade conservatory and open up their living space to the garden, whilst also using the new extension to create secure day-to-day access to the house.

With a challenging budget we decided to keep the form simple, focussing on the framing of one key view from the living area, through an enfilade of openings capturing a mature silver birch tree at the foot of the garden.

The angled fascia on the side of the extension, which lines through to a stone lintel in the existing house, forms an overhanging canopy to the new main entrance without overshadowing the garden room.

We used charred cedar in full length battens and flush mounted glazing in a minimal composition that matched the tones and hues of its garden setting.
