The conversion of a tired garage adjoining a traditional 1930s bungalow in North Edinburgh.

Using a simple palette of materials we wanted to create some depth to the façade, allow some light in and view out from the newly created utility/bathroom space. Given the use of the space and proximity to street, privacy was important.

We took the opportunity to provide some south-west facing built-in seating which was welcomed by the athlete client for stretching/changing post exercise.

Floor Plan

The door to the utility is deliberately hidden so as not to be confused as the front door/main entrance. We painted the principal entrance red to stress this point.

With a modest budget, we specified affordable, readily available materials and applied them to a well thought out composition, combined with simple, pared-back details.

Locally sourced larch cladding was used to provide texture and warmth to the seating/privacy baffles. Corrugated aluminium was used as a nod to traditional piecemeal development often found in utilitarian offshoots in the area.
