Conversion of former fishmonger’s retail unit in Joppa into our own studio.

This dilapidated retail unit had several lives prior to being purchased as a new base for Studio IMA in 2023. Over the years it had been heavily altered, with many historic features hidden away.

We peeled back the layers of alterations to reveal historic cornicing, panelling and floorboards, preserved found items like the terrazzo fish counter, an old oak water tank, and historic signage.

Floor Plan

The studio is also a canvas for displaying the work of other designers and craftspeople. A blackened steel shelf by Johannes Sailer, an ash and plywood studio table by Rory Middleton (specially sized for after-work table tennis) and a sliding stained glass window by Pavilion Pavilion enhance and complete the space.

The design and refurbishment of the studio was a collaborative effort involving the whole Studio IMA team in order to create a workspace which reflected our aims and ambitions for the practice. It now gives us a base at the heart of our local community from which we can work on projects across the country.
