Replacement of a much loved dilapidated shed with a small one-bedroom home clad in rusted corrugated panels that enjoys views over Ullapool harbour.

A key driver for the project was the existing corrugated shed which occupied the site. This informed the form and material palette of the house, which utilises rubble stone and rusted corrugated panels and maintains a low and private profile from Argyle Street.

The south elevation is more open; with slender timber fins, pale framed windows and doors augmenting the corrugated cladding. The plan arrangement places the living space on the upper level, enjoying views across Ullapool harbour and Loch Broom, whilst the ground floor has direct access to the loggia and garden beyond.

Short Section

The existing stone gable and dwarf rubble stone wall were retained and sensitively altered where necessary with any new elements seeking to echo the character of the current building whilst achieving a contemporary aesthetic.

The client has previously lived in Orkney and requested the inclusion of the small pop-up dormer detail prevalent in the Northern Isles.

We were conscious of the need to emulate the previous building without creating a pastiche. Our aim was to reflect the story of the recent changes as clearly as possible. For example, where we had to raise the ridge level of the roof, we retained and refurbished the original stone gable, expressing its change in height by introducing a ribbon window. This feature was kept visually simple by positioning the supporting structure within the depth of the window itself.

The finished building has been warmly embraced by the local community, who are delighted to see their much-loved “rusty net-loft” landmark renewed, revived, and proudly standing once again at the heart of the village.
