The original - an efficient, multipurpose small building designed as a modern and refined reinterpretation of vernacular buildings found throughout the Scottish countryside.

The Artist Bothy builds on the form and materiality of Inshriach Bothy, Bothy Project’s original residency location, built by hand in the Cairngorms in 2011. Its gabled form recalls typical agricultural structures, while the precise lines of the corrugated metal and timber cladding give a sharply contemporary edge. Inside, the unobstructed floor area makes optimal use of the available space, while windows on all aspects provide plenty of natural light.

Designed as an efficient, multipurpose space suited to a range of different uses, the compact cabin provides ideal accommodation for working or relaxing in a peaceful environment.

The simple design and spacious interiors allow the Bothies to fulfil various roles, such as a rural retreat, creative studio, garden office or gallery space. Each Bothy can be variously configured with a bed and kitchenette for overnight stays or a desk to allow for use as a studio or office.

We welcome enquiries from anyone interested in building one of our Bothy designs, or working with us to develop a bespoke solution for your project.

Inshriach Bothy

The Artist Bothy draws on the form and materiality of the first bothy developed by Bothy Project at Inshriach in the Cairngorms in 2011.

Andrew Ridley

The bothy was designed and delivered with a small funding grant, and built by hand by a small team of volunteers with a simple, agricultural form and reclaimed materials.

Inshriach hosted over 200 residencies in a secluded corner of the Cairngorms until it was retired as a Bothy Project location in 2023. Its simple form and carefully considered use of traditional vernacular materials has remained central to the design ethos of all of the members of the bothy family.
